What is Brainspotting?

"Brainspotting™ is a neuroscience-informed treatment which has been hypothesized to engage the brain’s natural healing mechanisms, using specific eye positions and focused mindfulness while the therapist offers attuned and compassionate presence." Brainspotting Canada

What can Brainspotting help with?

Brainspotting can be used to treat anything from trauma, to daily unwanted or even annoying patterns we all find ourselves in!  I have used Brainspotting to help clients with anxiety, guilt, trauma, performance worries, relational distress, family patterns, phobias, addictive behaviours, depression and physical pain.

In my practice, I also specialize in helping clients improve performance or deal with set backs. I have worked with highly successful leaders, academics, writers, artists, musicians and athletes, among others.

How does it work?

Clients often come to me with an  understanding of their patterns, and may have  tried many things to break free. They may have been in therapy for some time, and have analyzed themselves to death, but still find the same cycles returning.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, Brainspotting gives us direct access to deep brain structures and the patterns stuck in our autonomic nervous system. Because we access the direct physiology, changes can occur with a "bottom up approach" i.e. our physiology changes, and those changes translate to different perspectives, thoughts, performance and relational patterns.

Memories and experiences are not stored as "movies" in the brain, they are stored in our physiology - thought patterns, immune system patterns, digestion, heart rate, changes in breathing patterns.  We can use our own physiology in a Brainspotting session as a way to locate, process and release patterns that underly many emotional and physiological conditions.

I'm Neurodivergent or I think I might be, how will Brainspotting work for me?

Firstly, I understand the struggle of being Neurodivergent and trying to make ourselves fit into the various treatment and therapeutic modalities. Many clients come to me after feeling like they have "failed" therapy before, or that health care providers just doesn't understand they way they process.

As a fellow Neuro-spicy human, I have found that Brainspotting offers the greatest flexibility to allow each person's unique neurotype to heal in their own way. There are no rigid protocols that you have to follow. Many Neurodivergent clients find that they gain greater trust in their own ways of being in the world and understanding themselves through our Brainspotting sessions.
